HomeOne
Welcome to North America’s first hydrogen-heated house, HomeOne!
This groundbreaking project exemplifies Qualico and ATCO's dedication to innovative energy solutions and economic growth within Alberta. While hardly unusual or noteworthy from the outside, HomeOne is a milestone years in the making, following intensive research and studies.
HomeOne serves as a model of the hydrogen-heated homes planned in Qualico's 100% hydrogen-heated community in Bremner in partnership with ATCO in advance of breaking ground. The house can be found in Sherwood Park, within Qualico's established SummerWood community. It showcases how comfort, beauty, and efficiency can come together seamlessly.

HomeOne was built by Edmonton-based Sterling Homes and features an advanced hydrogen heating system: a dual hydrogen-fueled furnace and a water heater created by Calgary's own Gradient Thermal. This Home Hydrogen initiative was made possible through funding from Alberta Innovates and NRCan (National Resources Canada) and serves as an important model for future hydrogen-based heating solutions.
HomeOne showcases the future of low-carbon residential heating and is an important step in designing and building large-scale, hydrogen-heated communities here in Alberta.
In addition to Gradient Thermals "syncFURNACE," HomeOne shows how we can put energy efficiency at the forefront and has features throughout contributing to creating a more sustainable home, including energy-efficient appliances throughout, all triple pane windows with Argon coating, R-20 rated frost walls for enhanced ventilation, and the following innovative installations:
HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) and redundant heat source with FUJITSU-12 RLFCD heat pump and DH (Domestic Hot Water) storage tank
R20-rated frost walls for enhanced insulation
LifeBreath RNC 205 w/ DXLP02 Heat Recovery Ventilator
Mitsubishi Electric Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pump for Heating and Cooling

About Gradient Thermal
Gradient Thermal is at the forefront of heating technology, pioneering solutions that offer superior design, efficiency, and comfort. Founded in Calgary, Alberta, in 2011, the company is revolutionizing the way people heat their spaces by combining advanced technology with user-friendly functionality. From meticulous attention to home design to the vital work of installation contractors and ultimately ensuring homeowner comfort, Gradient Thermal considers every aspect of the heating experience. Proudly Canadian-made, Gradient Thermal delivers innovative, reliable, and sustainable heating solutions that exceed expectations and are environmentally responsible, redefining heating for the modern world.
After being approached by ATCO and receiving funding from Alberta Innovates, Gradient Thermal innovated a way to convert their already high-performance, energy-efficient dual hot-water heater and furnace to be compatible with hydrogen, providing a viable pathway to zero-emission home heating. The first of these units is being successfully used within the HomeOne demonstration house, with future plans to see them within the Bremner development and beyond.
